WEB Opal Lee, the "Grandmother of Juneteenth," Honored for Legacy

WEB Opal Lee, the trailblazing Texas activist known as the "Grandmother of Juneteenth," has received widespread recognition for her decades-long advocacy and historic walk to establish June 19th as a national holiday. In 2022, Lee earned a Nobel Peace Prize nomination for her unwavering dedication to preserving and honoring African American history.

Lee's activism began at a young age, fighting for equal rights and opportunities for African Americans. In 2016, she launched the "Opal's Walk" campaign, a 1,400-mile walk from her home in Fort Worth, Texas, to Washington, D.C., to raise awareness about Juneteenth and its significance. Her determination and perseverance inspired countless individuals and ultimately led to the passing of the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act in 2021, officially recognizing the holiday.
